Great Opportunities' challenge is to partner with more community pools in the San Juan Capistrano area and expand its Learn to Swim Program.  If you think you can help with this challenge, want to Donate , or want to Volunteer, please contact Great Opportunities.

According to the Orange County Health Care Agency, “Drowning consistently remains the leading cause of death for children ages 1-4, and among the top five leading causes for those under the age of 18 years, both in California and in Orange County”.  The city of San Juan Capistrano has been identified as having a significantly higher incident of Emergency Department (ED) visits related to immersion incidents and drownings, per capita.

GO’s goal is to significantly reduce, if not completely prevent immersion related incidents, and ultimately drownings, starting with the socio-economically disadvantaged youth of San Juan Capistrano and expand to the South County Tri-City area, to include the municipalities of Dana Point and San Clemente.

To date, GO has taught over 2600 youth in San Juan Capistrano and the Tri-City area to swim. Swim classes range from beginning to advanced and are offered free of charge.  The program is currently offered only during the months of June, July and August, and only at the San Juan Capistrano community pools of Casa de Capistrano and the Capistrano Villas. Swim instruction is in half-hour increments over a two-hour period.  Participants are grouped according to skill level, and required to complete a 10-minute math practice exercise, specific to their grade, to be able to participate in each instruction period. Instruction is predominately given by GO LMT (Leader Mentor Teachers) who are supervised by GO adult volunteers.  All GO Learn to Swim Instructors are certified in American Heart Association CPR and First-Aid.
